System description

a) History
Metal has been used for several centuries as the material for technically demanding roofing purposes (e.g. lead roofing of the Cologne Cathedral is about 500 years old).
In the appropriate literature, the double standing seam is known since around the beginning of the last century and it may be regarded as a development of the simple standing seam.

b) Applications
The seaming technique is considered to be the connection technology thin sheets metal roofing.  It facilitates rainproof covers even with the most complex roof shapes (e.g., tower, dome, shade structures). It results in fine-line optics with numerous detail variations.

c) Technology
Appropriate deformations (female and male coverage) on the two longitudinal edges prepare the metal strip for the seamed joint.


After the installation on a suitably prepared substructure and after fastening the metal sheet by means of fastenings (also called "clips"), the next sheet is put in place and the seamed joint between the two plates is formed into an angled standing seam or a double standing seam.


Depending on climatic or optical requirements, the seam can be produced at different heights.

For the economical production of the standing seam profiles, different profiling machine designs may be selected from the range available from Schlebach, depending on individual requirements and profile size.
The range of small machines that is available for 25 mm standing seams are the profiling machines EPM-25, MINI-LIGHT, MINI-PROF and MINI-PROF PLUS. The machines of the SPM range are also used to produce the standing seam 25 or 32. These include machine types SPM, SPM RS, SPM LM QA60 or the fully automatic version SPA.
For profile heights ranging from 38 mm to 50 mm the QUADRO series of machines may be used.
In a further operation before installation, the profiled sheets of covers for round gables or domed roofs must be bent into a convex shape that depends on the radius.



Rounding is done on a round arch curving machine RBM.

c) Installation
Installation of profile sheets
We distinguish between sheet cladding with sheet coverage of offcuts that is limited in length and material-dependent strip lengths of up to 14 m with some approved individual lengths even that are even longer.
Depending on the material the relevant manufacturer's instructions and country-specific regulations, standards and guidelines must be observed on installation. For this purpose, Schlebach has provided appropriate installation guidelines specifically for the use of aluminium and stainless steel.

Fastening the profile sheets
For the mechanical installation of the profile sheets on the substructure clips corresponding to nails or screws are used. These clips can consist of fixed clips or as sliding clips to compensate for longitudinal expansion.

Depending on the roofing material and the construction of the substructure different versions are available for the clips and the installation materials. Further information may be available from the following suppliers:

Bracket systems:


The number and spacing of the clips must be designed for local conditions with regard to wind loads on the building. For this purpose, the appropriate proof must be provided and country specific standards and guidelines taken into account.

Fastening the profile sheets
After the fastening of the profile sheet by means of clips, the overlapping female side is placed on the side of male side of the profile and folded in. Depending on loading and the technical specifications the seam can be produces as a simple angle seam or a double standing seam joint.
This may be accomplished by means of manual seamer or driven seaming machines.
Schlebach offers the seamer FLITZER, PICCOLO or SPIDER.
Depending on the material and type of fold, the machines can be equipped with different folding rollers.    

The design of seams, roof edge terminations and openings
For standing seams there are appropriate solutions catering for the different seam types.
Observe the guidelines provided by the material manufacturer and the relevant technical rules and regulations.
For round eaves trim, Schlebach offers two mechanical and economic solutions, KLS and EHA.

Other seams and terminations also produced by the corresponding folded flashing. Production takes place mostly on manual or CNC bending machines.

d) Material
Profiles are predominantly manufactured from cold rolled thin sheets and strips of stainless steel, steel, titanium zinc, aluminium and copper having a thickness of less than 1.0 mm.
